Over the last five years, support from the The Jonny has enabled The First Tee of Greater Washington, DC to expand programming in 14 different area schools and engage more than 11,000 young people in life skills programs.

The goal of The First Tee of Greater Washington, DC is to teach young people about the fundamentals of golf while instilling in them the Nine Core Values of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment; and teaching them about the Nine Healthy Habits of play, energy, safety, mind, family, vision, friends, school, and community.

The First Tee of Greater Washington, DC serves young people ages 7 to 18 in the District of Columbia itself, as well as in the Northern Virginia counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun. 65% of The First Tee of Greater Washington, DC’s participants are non-Caucasian.

The First Tee of Greater Washington, DC provides young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop life-enhancing values such as confidence, perseverance and judgment through golf and character education. It brings access and opportunities to local children, presenting a new world of opportunity that might not necessarily be readily available. Highlights include:

  • For the first time in the Chapter’s history, two of our young participants were selected to compete at Pebble Beach in the Pure Insurance Championship Impacting The First Tee.  

  • One of our participants, Victor Fuentes received an Evans Scholarship from the Western Golf Association.  He was awarded a full college scholarship and now attends Penn State!

  • In 2018, the chapter provided a record 1,471 young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to develop life-enhancing values at The First Tee Life Skills Experience Certifying Program across 17 program locations.  

  • The First Tee National School Program and The First Tee DRIVE Programs reached over 134,000 young people in 2018 in the area, including new school partnerships with the City of Alexandria.

The First Tee of Greater Washington, DC encourages physical activity and health as a lifestyle and is an important resource for kids after school.  It engages them positively and eases the burden on working parents.
